Unchained is the second album in Johnny Cash's American Recording series. On the album, Cash is backed by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Like all Cash's albums for American, it is produced by Rick Rubin.

In addition to three of Cash's own compositions, Unchained contained songs by Soundgarden ("Rusty Cage") and odd ball artist Beck ("Rowboat"), as well as a guest appearance from Flea, bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, on "Spiritual" and Lindsey Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood, of Fleetwood Mac, on "Sea of Heartbreak".

Unchained received a Grammy for Best Country Album which signals the high regard people were beginning to have for the late era career of Mr Cash - and arguably with the release of Solitary Man, things went even better from that time...

As became usual when Cash covered a song, the lyrics of the original took on new meaning and life. The use of Beck's Rowboat was an inspired Rubin song choice. When Beck sang it, it sounded like a classsic drunk in your beer love song. When Cash got his hands on the lyrics it became a record of a most devasting moment in his life. American III: Solitary Man Lyrics Johnny Cash

Solitary Man is the third album in the American Recordings series by The Man In Black himself, Johnny Cash. It was released in 2000.

Between Unchained and Solitary Man, Cash's health declined due to various ailments, and he was even hospitalized for pneumonia. His illness forced Cash to curtail his touring. Consequently, American III: Solitary Man contained Cash's response to his illness, typified by a version of Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down", as well as a version of U2's "One".

American III: Solitary Man, just like Cash's two previous albums produced by legendary producer Rick Rubin, was a Grammy Award winner, taking home the award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance for Cash's version of the Neil Diamond song "Solitary Man".

American IV: The Man Comes Around is the fourth album in the American Recordings series by Johnny Cash, released in 2002. The majority of songs are covers which Cash performs in his own sparse style, with help from producer Rick Rubin.

For instance, for the song "Personal Jesus", Rubin asked Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante to re-work an acoustic version of Martin Gore's song, which featured a simple acoustic riff that stripped down the song to a blues style.

Hurt was a surprise hit for Johnny Cash, largely due to a popular video. A stripped back, guitar based version of Nine Inch Nails classic track from The Downward Spiral, the song's meaning changed when Cash sang it. Like most of the covers as part of the American Recordings series, the way Cash evoked the songs, and their typically 'backwards' looking lyrics meant they become songs that reflected upon his life. For instance when he sings the line 'the needle tears a hole', the listener, who knows a little about Cash, will know he had many demons with drugs and alcohol over his life.

Cash changed the lyric slightly from the original 'crown of shit' became 'crown of thorns' - which was the basis of the play on words that Trent Reznor was originally basing the lyric on and this becoming a direct reference to Jesus Christ, like so many of Cash's songs. Hurt was such a hit that many people have covered it indeed Sheryl Crow did a cover. As part of American VI: Aint No Grave, Cash returned the favour by covering her Redemption Day.

Johnny Cash’s American VI: Ain’t No Grave, featuring the final recordings the Man in Black ever made before his death in September 2003, will be released via American Recordings and Lost Highway on February 26th, the day that would have marked Cash’s 78th birthday. Like the previous LPs in the American series, Rick Rubin produced the sixth installment.

Covers on the set include Sheryl Crow’s “Redemption Day,” Kris Kristofferson’s “For the Good Times,” Ed McCurdy’s “Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream” and Bob Nolan’s “Cool Water.”American VI will also feature the never-before-heard Cash original “I Corinthians: 15:55,” which he wrote during the last three years of his life. Cash began recording American VI in 2002 and worked up until his September 12th, 2003 death. Cash stuck with the project even after the death his wife June Carter in May 2003. “Johnny said that recording was his main reason for being alive. I think it was the only thing that kept him going,” Rubin said in a statement.

Guitarists Mike Campbell, Matt Sweeney, Jonny Polonsky and Smokey Hormel and keyboardist Benmont Tench join Cash on American VI, and the Avett Brothers’ Seth and Scott contribute to the title song “Ain’t No Grave.” As this album represents the last of Cash’s recordings, American VI will be the final installment of an American series that dates back to 1994. Both American III: Solitary Man and the American Recordings box set Unearthed were among Rolling Stone’s Top 100 Albums of the Decade.

The song was orginally written by Brother Claude Ely. The lyrics are a clear allusion to the rebirth of Jesus Christ and a person's jouney in the after life to meet him. Given Cash's concerns and thoughts about religtion and the knowledge his own death was nearing, it makes sense he chose to cover it.
